SENIOR DRAMA PRODUCTION: WEST SIDE STORY
‘Could it be? Yes, it could. Something’s coming – something good.’
This November, our talented pupils invite you to immerse yourself in a timeless tale of love, rivalry, and the quest for belonging as they present their Senior Drama Production: the iconic musical *West Side Story*. Set against the vibrant backdrop of 1950s Manhattan’s Upper West Side, this unforgettable production will be performed at the Ath, showcasing the incredible skills and passion of our young performers.
West Side Story, inspired by Shakespeare’s classic Romeo and Juliet, tells the poignant love story of Tony and Maria, two star-crossed lovers caught in the midst of a fierce feud between two teenage gangs – the Sharks and the Jets. As the gangs vie for dominance in their colourful but tumultuous neighbourhood, the narrative unfolds, revealing a deep exploration of societal divisions and the yearning for connection amidst chaos.
With powerful themes that resonate more than ever in today’s world, this production confronts the realities of gang rivalry and the tragic consequences of violence. As our pupils bring this story to life, they tackle these issues head-on, allowing our young audience to reflect on the wider implications of conflict and the impact of inherited struggles.
Get ready to be swept away by the incredible music of Leonard Bernstein and the heartfelt lyrics of Stephen Sondheim, as our talented cast performs beloved songs like “Tonight,” “Somewhere,” and “I Feel Pretty.” Under the guidance of our dedicated drama and music department, each performance promises to capture the essence of hope, tragedy, and the indomitable spirit of youth.
