WARMINSTER’S RYDER CUP

While the big guns of American and European golf were doing battle in Paris, Warminster’s own version of team golf was taking place in the beautiful surroundings of Orchardleigh Golf Club in Frome. Sixteen golfers and supporters gathered for our first ever Old Verlucian golf day which was sponsored and hosted by businessman Stuart D’Souza (OV99). OVs were treated to some splendid kit, a chance to catch up and a free day’s play.
Despite the opening shot by Graeme McQueen heading straight into the trees, the quality of golf during the day was respectable and the competition strong. Stella Aldridge and Keely Beresford (OV93), toured the course on a buggy to ensure that fair play was conducted throughout the day and also to supply water and chocolate bars to the weary golfers.
With the addition of the School’s Director of Sport, Tim Watts “The Directors” team, which also included John and Chris Bate and Matthew Wilson, proved too strong for the rest. After some intense play they narrowly won the D’Souza Cup by a single point over the “Dunn Deal” team, captained by former Head Boy and Birmingham University golfer Charles Dunn (OV15). Charles with his 300 yard drives was clearly the outstanding golfer of the day, but was ably accompanied by parent and OV Giles Atkinson (OV01), as well as our very own Head Chef & Catering Manager, Alex Rall.
Following a delicious meal, we were delighted to welcome the Headmaster, Mark Mortimer, to present the prizes to our laudable winners. Congratulations to Tim Watts who won the longest drive competition and John Bates who was closest to the pin on the 7th. Commiserations to Stuart’s team, “Boniface 99”, of Ben Le Mare, Tim Forster and Rob Faulconer (all OV99), who notwithstanding some valiant efforts came in third place. Despite, or possibly because of this, we are delighted to announce that Stuart is keen to sponsor the event next year. So, OV golfers who missed out on this fantastic reunion please get your game sharpened up for 2019 and register your interest with Stella Aldridge.
Our thanks to Stuart for sponsoring a wonderful day for Old Verlucians.
