TA TALK: A GOLDEN EVENING

TA TALK: A GOLDEN EVENING

Last night, we welcomed members of the local community, pupils and badminton fans to spend the evening with five-time gold medalist & Olympic silver medalist, Gail Emms.

Gail spent some time with current pupils during their badminton fixture, observing their skills and offering encouragement. During her talk, Gail shared stories of how she met her famed doubles partner and their fight to get to the top. Being inspired by her mum (her hero and champion), one of the first Lionesses, she found her passion for badminton at an early age. It was not an easy start to Gail’s career, as she explained to the audience how she was told that she ‘wasn’t skilled enough’ or ‘naturally talented’ enough to make it in the elite world of badminton. However, after a break from the sport during her time at university, she reunited with her old doubles partner with fresh determination to make it to the pinnacle of her beloved sport.

The audience were also given an extra treat, a chance to hold Gail’s World Championship gold medal, and her Olympic Silver medal, providing inspiration to the younger attendees of what is possible with determination and focus. The lasting message that was given to the audience was ‘Be the best you that you can be.’  A lesson for young and old to take away from a truly inspirational evening.

Headmaster, Matt Williams, commented “Thank you to the wonderful Gail Emms MBE for delivering our first 'Thomas Arnold Talk' of 2023. Inspiring, moving and funny – a brilliant evening enjoyed by parents, pupils and badminton fans!”
