SWIMMING THE CHANNEL

SWIMMING THE CHANNEL

With the weather on our side, Year 7 to Year 13, managed to collectively swim the equivalent of the English Channel totalling 1,877 lengths. We calculated our swimathon on the normal and shortest swimming route across the channel which is 21 miles. From Folkestone to Cap Griz-Nez. In fact, with an hour to spare, we began our return journey by swimming a further 43 lengths.

The main aim of this event was to raise money for Sports Relief as well as showing that the PE class were able to plan and execute a project, of our choosing, as part of our Cambridge Technical course.

As organisers we were really impressed with the turnout, enthusiasm and support of the pupils – around forty participants in total. However we weren’t sure if this was due to the sun or an opportunity to miss lessons. Whichever, it was awesome to see all ages and abilities taking part together in order to complete our end goal, swimming for a total of 5 hours.

Thanks to the catering staff, Jon Edkins, Yellow Balloon Films and especially Mrs Walmsley, for her overall support throughout and helping us to make this event fun and achievable.

Here’s to swimming the English Channel and back again in 2019! Take a look at us Swimming the English Channel – SWIMATHON 2018.
