SPORTS ROUNDUP

SPORTS ROUNDUP

The latest roundup from Mr Lyons.

As one would expect as a Director of Sport, I am a staunch advocate for the irrefutable benefits of sport and exercise, and the additional benefits that playing team sports can bring.  In the year groups where we play fixtures with other schools, thus far this year, 72% of our pupils have represented the school.  This is a fantastic testament to the effort and tenacity of our pupils.  As a small school we really do rely on our pupils (and parents) spirit and willingness to get stuck in!

A very busy fortnight has seen our 1st XI footballers enjoy two solid recent performances, last week away at Taunton and yesterday at King’s Bruton and the senior netballers continued their preparation for their upcoming season with midweek fixtures with Kingdown and Wessex Blades. Last weekend we hosted Marlborough, Bryanston and Leweston for some really competitive hockey and rugby fixtures.  The U15 boys rugby NatWest Vase campaign was ended at Marlborough on Tuesday.  The boys played really well and have had a fantastic season with 25 different players having played this season, including some of those for whom rugby is a completely new sport.

On Thursday along with the 1st football with King’s Bruton, the girls 1st XI hockey edged a tight game with Royal High, Bath and the 1st XV were on the other end of a tight game with Monkton, with our hosts emerging 0-7 victors.  The senior boys have been beset by injury and unavailability this season and it is to theirs and Mr Ball’s great credit that they have persevered and kept battling in challenging circumstances.  We will hope for better luck for them when they switch over to the sevens format of the game after Christmas.

Tomorrow sees the final fixture Saturday of the winter term, hockey fixtures with Bryanston and Milton Abbey and Rugby with Monkton Combe.  Please do come over from the WSPA Christmas market in the sports hall to take in some of the action.

As we head into the spring term and our core sport focus switches to netball and hockey, please check the SOCS calendar for information regarding fixtures.
