SPORTS DAY
Thursday 1st July, saw our Senior School sports day take place for the first time since 2019. Thanks to all the hard work carried out by our grounds and maintenance staff, Cold Harbour was ready to go and looked amazing.
Years 7, 8 and 9 pupils started off with their events in the morning, with Year 10 and the Lower Sixth competing in the afternoon.
The sun was shining and the efforts and performances reflected the glorious summer sun. With pupils competing in the long jump, high jump, javelin, shot put, 1500m, 400m, 200m, 100m and 4x100m relays, there was plenty to go around for parents and visitors who came to watch. There were some outstanding performances from our pupils; Molly Clare winning the 100m, Javelin and Long Jump and Rosie Campbell-Barnard breaking the 1500m school record by 20 seconds, running a superb 5 minutes 27 seconds, and then going on to win the 400m!
In the afternoon, the Year 10 and Lower Sixth pupils, took over where the younger years had left off. The atmosphere was superb with pupils cheering not just for their House, but for everyone who was competing, and there was a real sense of the School community shining through.
Like the morning session, there were some outstanding performances from our pupils. Sam Whitmarsh took the Year 10 boys’ sprint double, winning the 100m and 200m. Ben Wagstaff won both the 400m and the 1500m, equalling the School record for the 1500m. One of the real highlights were the boys’ high jump, with Charlie Thomlinson taking the crown in the Year 10 event, just beating Niklas Degen on count back. Matthew Hodgson took a superb Lower Sixth event, clearing 1.60m, and narrowly beating Josh Taylor. The girls' events were as outstanding, with Kelly Lin smashing the School record in the Shot Put, throwing a superb 9.34m and then winning the 400m. Megan Galpin narrowly missed another Javelin school record by 20 centimetres. Maddie Nickell, having returned from Cornwall especially for the day, did not let the long journey affect her, winning both the long jump and 1500m with impressive performances. In Year 10, Anna Galpin, won the Javelin and 100m with superb performances, and then anchored the Finch 4x100m relay team to claim the win. Tabby Clarke led from start to finish in the girls 1500m and ran a superb race.
Overall, an outstanding day of sport with some superb performances from our pupils. Athletics is in a really good position with strength in real depth across all year groups. In such a strange year, where we have not been able to fully enjoy what our pupils can do, I have never been so proud, as Director of Sport, to see such brilliant performances and efforts from everyone, whether they won, came second, third or merely got involved to support their House, they did the School proud, and Jon was there to capture all the action.
