READY, COUNT, BAKE!
Maths in Year 4 this week has been enhanced by the very appealing and practical task of baking.
The children’s focus has been to use and apply their knowledge of decimal notation to tenths to record mass in kilograms, for example 6·4 kg. Using multiples of standard weights they have been able to balance 1 kg and 100 g, and to balance masses using the least number of standard weights. The highlight as you may see from their faces was using kitchen scales. In small groups the children made batches for their class of either chocolate crispy biscuits or orange shortbread by carefully following the recipes and measuring the ingredients having made sure they could read and understand the scales.
