OLYMPIC SPORT AND FUN

Our 7th annual awards ceremony proved to be another delightful and enjoyable evening in which all pupils showed wonderful support for one another.

Despite the dull, wet weather conditions outside, inside, the Junior Sports Awards atmosphere was one of warmth, colour and energy. Clearly the stormy conditions were not going to dampen pupil’s spirits. Over 120 pupils spilled into the fabulous Thomas Arnold Hall. The décor was sympathetic to the sporting events of 2016 with a clear Olympic theme and the ‘cootie catchers’ on each table – displaying the evenings' programme – were a hit. The chocolate sports balls scattered around the tables also went down a treat!

Peter Wong received the first award of the evening and it was met with a roar of applause from his peers and teachers alike. Brett Riley was awarded Most Improved Player  for Cricket and he also stood to applause and cheers. His beaming smile summed up the mood of the evening. The Year 7 girls were dominant in the Year 7/8 awards with Immie Brumby, Anna Payne and Megan Galpin all winning awards and proving they can compete against older girls.

A total of 29 awards were presented to 28 individual pupils and this was topped off with the Team of the Year Award  which was a closely guarded secret until the end of the evening. These awards, combined with 5 colours certificates, meant that over a quarter of the pupils present were acknowledged for their outstanding achievements during the year. The Team of the Year  trophy is always a big deal and this year was no different, with no less than five teams securing an over 70% win rate during their term. Ultimately, it was won by the U15 Boys Hockey team, whilst the U12 Girls Tennis and U15 Girls Netball narrowly missed out.

Almost 150 guests enjoyed a wonderful buffet laid on by Alex Rall and his fantastic team and was followed by a loud and enjoyable DJ set, along with four large inflatables outside, in gale force winds.

Nicola Curtis, Assistant Director of Sport said “This was my final Sports Awards at Warminster School and I can say with confidence that pupils of Warminster really embrace sport, participate and support each other. I have been very proud to be their PE teacher over the past 11 years and have enjoyed being a part of the wonderful Warminster community.”
