MODERN FOREIGN LANGUAGES FUN
Languages Fun
Our Languages Department is keen to instil the love of other languages and cultures as early as possible. Every year at the end of June, we invite Year 5 pupils from local schools to Warminster School for a language immersion experience; “Languages Fun at Warminster!” On 24th June, we welcomed more than 60 children and their teachers from Crockerton School, St Margaret’s Prep School and our very own Warminster Prep to spend the day partaking in French, Spanish and German activities.
It is not a teacher-led day by any means. In fact, our carefully selected Year 9 and Sixth Form linguists lead the day and our visiting Year 5 pupils were divided into small groups and set a wide and varied range of tasks. This included a treasure hunt in French and learning a German or Spanish song which culminated in every group creating and performing in a music video.
Even though there was only a short time to learn the songs and record the videos the standard was excellent!
Other highlights of the day included every pupil receiving their very own “Language Passport” that was used for the activities throughout the day. Our visitors also listened to a presentation about languages by a group of Sixth Form pupils, which incorporated a sketch showing just how useful a language can be when trying to buy a train ticket in Spain!
Our Year 9 pupils impressed with some excellent leadership skills and the best pupils in each group were awarded with a certificate.
We very much hope all pupils left Warminster School feeling as enthusiastic about learning languages as we are and plans for next year’s European Day of Languages are already in motion and will include an Escape Room activity! We would like to wish everyone a fantastic summer break and hope that you will make good use of your language skills wherever your travels take you!
