LEARNING TO FENCE

LEARNING TO FENCE

Fencing began at Warminster School in September 2015, when Jemma Westgate was with us as a Sports Assistant in the Prep School for a year.  Jemma was a GB Modern Pentathlete and encouraged us to try fencing.  Jamie Cooke, present GB Pentathlete also visited us to raise money for sports equipment and we were treated to a fencing bout!

Robert Brunige and Sandra Eggington (both Level 3 & Level 2 coaches) have helped to further introduce fencing at Warminster.  In January, we took our first group of fencers to the South West Tournament.  Robert competed in the Montreal, Moscow and Los Angeles Olympics as well as world champion events.  He was junior world champion in 1976 and British Champion in 1981.

We have made a great start to this sport all thanks to our enthusiastic and welcoming coaches. Robert and Sandra have introduced Foil and Epee fencing, depending on age and experience.  The fencers start with small kit from age 7 and are able to compete from age 10. The coaches this term have also started a senior games option for Year 11-13 for those interested.

It is a wonderful sport to try and enjoy. For Year 6-9 there is a club at the Prep on a Tuesday from 5:00-6:00pm.  Our coaches also work at Wessex Blades, Warminster Fencing Club which runs on a Wednesday evening 7:00-10:00pm at Warminster Leisure Centre.
