CURRICULUM ENRICHMENT DAY

CURRICULUM ENRICHMENT DAY

This year’s Curriculum Enrichment Day was a great success. Pupils from all three houses worked tirelessly over the course of the day and the previous two weeks to produce what can only be described as fantastic, professional looking , multi-media presentations on global Conservation. Each house first had to wow the judges with their fayre stand, displaying their work on why their chosen biome should be conserved above all others. Arnold’s rainforest sounds and homemade badges showed off their live twitter feed for #followthefrog. Ken’s stand was the one which impressed the most, with shadow puppets, animal onesies adorned and a giant homemade elephant stalking the judges around the stand. Deny’s leafy tent coaxed the judges in, who were soon seduced by the fairy lights and stories on the plight of cute furry animals.

At 2pm, the real fun began. All three houses delivered their presentations with gusto. The key messages from each house were heard through a mixture of drama, live music and carefully edited and crafted videos. Even with technical difficulties, Ken managed to make it through to their curtain closer of ‘Circle of Life’ with Jeremy Rafiki Robertson quite nearly stealing the limelight. Arnold’s dramatic whole house cut down, set the tone for an informative and thought provoking presentation with their very own version of University come Rainforest Challenge. No one was quite sure who won out of the Congo and the Amazon, but I do not think it really mattered. Denys took the reins shortly afterwards and with some emotive dance, displayed why deciduous woodlands should be protected. Did they realise that Intro by The XX was one of the judge’s favourite tracks which they used for their performance?

To top it all off, the houses battled it out in a three way debate. Whilst Arnold literally tried to exemplify deforestation with cutting replies, Denys’ Veitch and McCormack were on point with their answers.

After much deliberation, and a real test of Maths for the incoming head of the subject, it was worked out that Arnold were the worthy winners, followed by Ken, then Denys. As one Head of House later put it, it’s not really about the winning, it’s about everyone having fun. Needless to say, this was not the Head of Arnold!
