CURRICULUM ENRICHMENT DAY 2015
This years event followed the theme of UN Millenium Goals with each House assigned two goals each before deciding on one each.
Dr. Jane Goodall DBE, Founder of the Jane Goodall Institute & UN Messenger of Peace, sent a message of encouragment “I am very pleased to hear about your School, your project on the Sustainable Development Goals and all you are doing in spite of the obstacles many of you face. I want to tell you all to follow your dreams! With hard work, determination, dedication, hope and commitment anything is possible. Every single one of you matters and makes a difference very day. It is up to YOU what kind of difference you make. Only when we can learn to show respect for each other, all animals and our planet can we begin to heal our world. Time for our planet is precious, and the Jane Goodall Institute is working with young people throughout the world, to endorse these values, through our Roots & Shoots programme – they are truly making a difference. Together we can make this world a better place for all.”
Arnold chose to focus on developing global partnerships for development, Denys looked at eradicating extreme poverty and hunger, with Ken looking at reducing child mortality.
Each House had spent two weeks working in subgroups of pupils from different years to prepare for the main event on Wednesday 18th November. On the day, each House prepared a presentation and a display of art, music, DT and multimedia. Finally, two members of each House took part in a debate before questions were asked from the audience.
The day was a great success with pupils fully engaged in the theme. The Lower Sixth pupils showed great leadership skills, a vital experience for them to have gained. Our judges, Councillor Sue Fraser, Mayor of Warminster, Mr John Carmichael, Former Millenium Commisioner to Ghana and Mr Jonathan Bonnell, Head of Boarding, highly commended each House for the work that they had put in.
Following the judges review, it was decided that Arnold House with 129 points were the winning house and they were presented with the “Curriculum Enrichment Cup” as well as an indestructible football donated by Mr Carmichael. Denys House came second with 128 points and Ken third with 115 points.
Mark Sully, Deputy Head (Academic) commented, “Curriculum Enrichment Day always provides our pupils with an opportunity to work with other pupils from different year groups in a way that enriches their education. The ability to work with people who you don't know or have just met is a fantastic life skill and an example of how we like to ensure our pupils gain the all important 'soft skills' whilst here at Warminster School. This years theme was very apt with all that has happened in the world recently and our pupils fully engaged in the day and brought together skills from different subject areas.”
