AN ACTION PACKED FESTIVE PERIOD FOR MODERN FOREIGN LANGUAGES

December was a busy time for Modern Foreign Languages, who managed to fit in an inaugural exchange visit, a Christmas card swap, as well as a French rendition of a classic Christmas carol…
Following on from our successful visit to Valladolid in October, December 4th saw the School welcome our partners from Zaragoza, whose pupils spent a week at Warminster, experiencing a taste of both English school and family life. The vast majority of visiting students had the opportunity to stay with the families of Warminster pupils, giving them a unique insight into the English way of living. A particular highlight for our guests was a day trip to Stonehenge.
The final day was a bittersweet moment, with many hugs and tears exchanged between new friends. Luckily, however, links can be re-established quickly – Warminster pupils are making the return journey to Spain in May!
Spain is not the only country in which we have been developing our continental relationships – we have also linked up with our partners in Cognac, France, through a Christmas card and letter exchange. This was a whole School initiative, with children from both Prep and Senior School participating. We look forward to welcoming our French partners when they visit in March.
Our Prep and Senior choirs were given the opportunity to add a multi-lingual flavour to Carols by Candlelight by singing a verse of the classic Christmas carol, Silent Night (or should we call it Douce Nuit?!) in French. The hard hours of preparation and practice certainly paid off – our Head of Department describing it as a “beautiful rendition”.
The Spring Term should see no end to our busy schedule of activities, with Years 5-9 undertaking a French and Spanish poetry competition, a visit from the Spanish Firewalk Theatre for Years 10-13 later this month, and a visit to the Royal High School, Bath for a Modern Foreign Language speaking competition in March.
