Pupils in Years 7 and 10 Art Day benefited from and much enjoyed the experience of our Art Day on Friday 13th June. We invited three different contemporary artists to work with our pupils on a range of collaborative projects. The artists were Derek Kinzett and Melanie Day (both wire sculptors) and Kate Rattray, who specialises in mosaic art.
The pupils were split into three groups and participated in three different workshops throughout the day under the guidance of our three visiting artists. The pupils helped Derek Kinsett in creating a sculpture of a human figure, made from wire - the result is a unique, ghostly and ethereal sculpture. They also tried their hands in creating wire birds under the watchful eye of Melanie Day - this proved to be an intriguing, complex and challenging process, with some great results.
Finally, everyone contributed to producing a mosaic tableau - a noisy and fun-filled process led by Kate Rattray.
Not only did the pupils have great fun working with the three artists, but the day gave them with the opportunity of experiencing and developing skills, methods and materials which went well beyond the experience of a normal art lesson. The resulting artworks are impressive and bear testament to the success of the day - they will be on permanent display within the school grounds.
