The Warminster 1st XI Cricket team has enjoyed a successful month of May' winning all three recent games against Wells Cathedral School, Kingdown School (thus winning the annual the Duke of Kent Cup) and Downside School.
Against Wells Cathedral School, Warminster played the shortened Twenty/20 game as the Year 11s had their end-of-year Dinner. After winning the toss and electing to bowl, Warminster chipped away against a strong Wells CS batting line up. Martyn Perry and Tom Mundy kept the scoring rate down and it was only some late big hitting by the lower order batsmen that allowed Wells CS to achieve a total of 151-6 off their allocated overs. Despite losing a quick couple of wickets, Warminster continued to stay up with the run rate, and with Tom Mundy carrying his bat throughout the innings, Warminster saw the game through with two balls remaining.
On Thursday 15th May Warminster played against Kingdown School for the annual Duke of Kent Cup. Warminster won a crucial toss and again elected to field in this 25-over game. An outstanding opening bowling spell by James Cracknell (5 overs, 2 wickets for 2 runs) helped restrict the Kingdown's innings. At one stage, Kingdown were 31-3 off 19 overs. Some late middle-order hitting allowed Kingdown to reach 88 for 6 from their allocated 25 overs. Warminster began their batting strongly with the free-hitting Tom Mundy and Nick Bourne regularly finding the gaps.
However, 3 quick wickets put the pressure back on Warminster and it required someone to step up and take responsibility of the innings.
Martyn Perry, batting with greater confidence, began to manoeuvre the ball around the field and with a flurry of big hitting off the Kingdown leg spinner, Warminster reached their required total of 89 with 4 wickets down and with 7 overs to spare.
On Saturday 17th May, Warminster 1st XI travelled to Downside. After 2 convincing wins, Warminster were full of confidence going into this encounter. Despite their captain turning up late, Warminster were extremely busy and effective in the field. The Downside openers looked extremely solid and built a 60-run opening stand, but Warminster's bowlers kept plugging away. It was Anand Ladva-Santana who made the breakthrough, clean bowling Downside's opening batsmen - and the no 3 batsmen duly followed him back to the pavilion two balls later. Wickets continued to tumble and, with James Short and Arthur-Hayford-Taylor picking up their first wickets of the season, Downside completed their 30 overs at 130-9. Once again confidence was high and initially Warminster's opening batsmen were in Twenty/20 mode, scoring at nearly 10 an over. However, 3 quick wickets put a check to that and the run rate slowed down dramatically. Despite this, Warminster were always in control and it was Martyn Perry who saw the team home with 7 overs to spare and a 6 wicket win.
On Thursday 22nd May, Warminster host the staff XI, including the Headmaster, at Warminster Cricket Club in their annual Twenty/20 game.
