At GCSE level students follow the popular and accessible AQA courses in English and English Literature. The AQA Anthology forms the bedrock of both courses and enables students to experience a wide variety of literature from around the world.

Coursework tasks are thoughtfully and imaginatively devised by our experienced team of teachers to enable the students to achieve the highest standards. As well as studying Shakespeare and a variety of pre-1914 authors, students also develop their knowledge about language through challenging media and creative writing tasks. It is our aim that, by exploring the works of some of the great writers, our students will themselves discover the power of language.

Students wishing to take the subject for a year to AS and or two years to A2 level will follow the AQA English Literature A Specification. Under the expert guidance of the Head of Department, Mike Thompson and James Holiday-Scott, students will develop the skills of reading, analyzing and communication. Through their close study of literature on the twin themes of World War I Literature and Love Through the Ages, which includes the study of a careful variety of texts from Shakespeare to the present day, students will themselves become more discerning readers and better writers.

Results in this subject have been outstanding in recent years. 100 per cent pass rates at A level and GCSE English Literature have become the norm as well as healthy 80-90 per cent plus A* - C pass rates in GCSE English.

Students wishing to take the International Baccalaureate will be able to study at either Standard Level or Higher Level and take both IB1 and IB2 Literature.  This wide ranging, challenging and stimulating course is expertly guidede by Susie Parrack, Sally Pollard and Cristina George.  Students will explore the themes major themes in literature and life from a wide range of historical and contemporary classics.  This year's theme of "Freedom" provides for relevant and critical study of current issues through the lens of great writing.

In Years 7, 8 and 9, students follow schemes of work which adhere to the National Curriculum.

Throughout the year, the Department organizes a range of activities, including regular visits to theatres in Bath, Salisbury, Bristol, Frome and Stratford, a poetry and prose evening, and various writing competitions. The School also has a fine reputation for Public Speaking and Debating.
