Past outings include:

  • Student conference to Bristol University. Speakers included current examiners giving tips on exam question interpretation (as well as recent Big Brother contestants!).
  • In 2005 'On the Edge' was performed by the Exstream Theatre Company; a production sponsored by the Wellcome Foundation, this focussed on mental health issues most relevant to teenagers, raising awareness of mental illness and teenage psychosis.

Fact: 1 in 4 of us will suffer from mental illness at some time in our lives.

  • Clouds house - a chance for students to talk to clients and therapists at a specialised rehabilitation clinic where many of the treatments are based on psychological theory.
  • Visit from Elaine Godley a professional psychologist who came in to run a personality profiling session with both L6 and U6 students.

Forthcoming trips:

  • Conference trip taking place early in the year for AS students. This is run by one of the current AQA examiners
  • A visit to Monkey World is planned for the future. This will give students a chance to see some animal behaviour in action. Apes argue and make up again, cooperate in order to achieve a common goal, grieve for their dead.

Fact: we share 99.4% of the same DNA as a chimpanzee - (but there again we are 50% banana (genetically speaking that is!)

(link to BBC web site)

So how do apes behave when they have had a traumatic infancy? What can we learn from then to help our understanding of children who may have suffered from privation? We will be adopting one of the monkeys and charting their progress over the forthcoming months and years.

  • @ Bristol

A chance to see up to date exhibitions linking to topics such as perception and physiological psychology

  • Visit to Bath University - Primary Care Trust Dept of Mental Health Research
  • Visit to Warminster School Courtyard Nursery

Plans

Links are also being developed with other secondary schools in the area which will give students the opportunity to share ideas and resources.
