Year Three Quarry Trip
February 2010
On the 25th February 2010 3RG went to Moon’s Hill Quarry to learn about rocks as part of our Science topic.
When we arrived at the quarry we saw big piles of stone and grit and that made us interested in what we were going to be doing.
We met Mrs May and Mrs Laken at the centre. The classroom had lots of space and there was a nice view of a lake out of the window. We couldn’t wait to get started.
First we split up into two groups. The first group set off to see the Quarry. Meanwhile, group 2 were doing some scientific investigations in the classroom.
We put on helmets, protective glasses and visibility jackets before we could go to Whatley Quarry, which is about 1.7km wide. On the way there we had to spot quarries, quarry lorries and farms. When we got there it was very noisy because of the machines crushing the rocks. When we saw some of the drivers Mrs May told us to wave. The man driving the loading shovel drove towards us it got bigger and bigger and bigger. Eventually it stopped right in front of us so we could step in. The next machine we saw was the giant drill. It is used to drill 60 holes in the rock which would be filled with explosives. That is how they have to break the rock.
We saw the dumpers emptying their rocks into the crusher. It was so noisy we weren’t allowed inside but Mrs Glenny took a photo. The limestone from the quarry is mostly used for roads but they are using some for 2012 Olympics.
Back in the classroom we were discussing rocks and experimenting with them to find out their properties. We also looked at the different uses of limestone. Did you know there is limestone in toothpaste, roads, toothbrushes, lipstick, cutlery, foundation, windows, cars and paint? In fact you all eat limestone every day because it is in cereals and bread.
We learnt about Health and safety at the Quarry. We spotted the differences between a safe and a dangerous quarry.
We learnt how the rocks are sorted into different sizes by sieving and had a go ourselves.
At the end of the day we had a lot of laughs dressing up Niamh and Ross as Quarry workers. They were hilarious, especially when they were trying to look official!
We also invented a tongue twister and this is how it goes:
Laurie drives his quarry lorry not a trolley to the quarry quickly.
