‘Music for all’ is a fundamental principle of the department’s work. Participation in instrumental and choral ensembles inspires loyalty, confidence and an appreciation of quality. All pupils follow a course based on the essential skills of PERFORMING, LISTENING and COMPOSING. Solo instrumental work is encouraged at all levels and class music is fully integrated with the performances of school ensembles – choirs, recorder group, wind band and string orchestra, etc., in addition to inclusion in musical plays and concerts promoted by the Prep School.
Over Seventy pupils currently receive tuition on a range of orchestral instruments and the school is fortunate to have additional services of eight visiting peripatetic music specialists. Regular lunchtime concerts provide a platform for children to perform before an invited audience, with pupils and staff participating in an annual concert and arts festival in the spring term.
