Department Facilities

The P.E. Department are justifiably proud of the many sports facilities we have at our disposal for lessons and fixtures, all beautifully maintained by the in house Grounds staff.  These facilities include:

Boniface pitch  -  This is a large well kept pitch area used for Rugby and Football in the Autumn and Winter terms respectively and employed as a Athletics practice area and a Softball diamond in the Summer term.

Cold Harbour  -  Currently our main outdoor sports facility Cold Harbour (living up to its frosty name in the middle of December!) provides us with two Rugby pitches and grided trained areas during the first term. In the Second term, beginning in January, the pitches are used more frequently for Football though Rugby does still prevail in a training and ‘sevens’ capacity. Finally in the warm summer Term Cold Harbour is a cricket venue for the first XI with a full size grass 400m running track running around the outside of the boundary.

Byne Paddock  -  Byne Paddock is primarily used as a grass classroom, suffering the brunt of usage in bad weather to preserve the higher quality pitches. Most frequently set up as a Football pitch Byne Paddock is cheerfully able to host Junior Football matches and, in the Summer Term, ‘Byne’ provides two Rounders pitches for our GSCE pupils and Girls Rounders teams to practice on.

Astroturf  -  The School Astroturf lives up to it’s name as an ‘all-weather-pitch’ and is in use virtually every single school day from the beginning of the School year in September, to the end in July. Employed as a Girls’ Hockey pitch in the first term, a Boys’ Hockey Pitch in the second term and in the third term as a Tennis facility boasting nine Tennis courts. The sand based surface is suitable for all playing conditions and has hosted fixtures for several years.

Fitness Suite  -  The P.E. Department Fitness suite has been newly refurbished to the highest standard. Boasting a range ‘State of the Art’ Cardiovascular and Resistance equipment alongside a full complement of ‘free weights’. Gym members are now able to choose from Rowing Machines, Treadmills, an Elliptical Cross Trainer and a Stationary Bike to match their training with each specific need. All machines are fully programmable, give instant feedback of performance and all but one are able to tell its users heart rate and calories used during exercise. Resistance machines in the Gym can be set to any level of resistance to suit training needs and all members shown, during their Gym induction, how to target any and every imaginable muscle group. The Leg Press and Smith Machine are currently proving very with the school Rugby first XV. The available ‘free weights’ include a set of dumbbell pairs ranging from 5kg to a hefty 25kg, which can be used in conjunction with the Preacher Curl Bench and the Dorsal Raise unit. The fan/ heating system, new carpet, paint job and mirror wall make the Fitness Suite a pleasant environment in which to work up a sweat.

Sports Hall  -  Our four court Sports Hall plays host to lessons for Badminton, Gymnastics, Basketball, Short Tennis, Trampolining, Volleyball and indoor Football and Hockey. The year ten and eleven GCSE P.E. classes use the Sports Hall as a venue for Circuit Training and the 6th Form receive their practical A-Level lessons here.

Squash Courts. Unusually for a school of our size have two fully operational Squash courts, popular with staff and students our Squash courts have overhead lighting, clear wall and floor marking and a viewing gallery.
