The Department is proud of its inclusive policy whereby a high percentage of pupils study a language to GCSE level. In the GCSE Public Examinations in June 2009, 84% of pupils gained passes at grades A-C in French, with 57% achieving grades A and B. Overall, 77% of pupils studying French, German and Spanish gained A-C grades at GCSE, 53% gaining grades A and B.
At Advanced level in French and German, there was a 100% pass rate in June 2009. These results continue the series of examination result successes enjoyed by the Department over many years.
The results for the International Baccalaureate have further underlined the achievements of the Department with the average points per subject being as follows: French B 6.3, Spanish B 6, and Spanish (ab initio) 6, French (ab initio) 5, and German A1 5.3. No student gained less than 4 points and 4 students gained a highly commendable 7 points.
