Learning Design and Technology at school helps to prepare students for living and working in a technological world. It does this by teaching them how to analyse products and their application, specific knowledge and its application and the design methods and manufacturing skills needed to produce quality practical solutions to real problems. It stimulates both intellectual and creative abilities, develops skills in communication, problem solving, the application of number, and information technology, and develops the personal qualities needed to complete a design project from initial ideas to finished product.
Design and Technology makes immediate and practical use of knowledge and skills from other subjects. It is linked with art, mathematics and science and is a challenge to all students. It requires initiative, an enquiring mind, determination, the careful management of time and resources, and a sense of responsibility for making decisions and taking action.
At Warminster School, all pupils follow a course in Design and Technology during Years 7, 8 and 9 that incorporates projects in the areas of Resistant Materials, Graphics and Electronics. By the end of Year 9 students will have completed in the region of 10 practical projects and can decide whether to take DT(Resistant Materials), DT(Graphic Products) or DT(Electronic Products) as one of their GCSE options.
Upon the successful completion of the GCSE course, students may opt for further study by taking A-Levels in Product Design (Resistant Materials), Product Design (Graphics) or Electronics.
Design and technology provides a useful platform for further study in areas such as architecture, product design, ergonomics, electronic engineering, mechanical engineering, aeronautical engineering, computer hardware engineering, occupational therapy, urban planning, interior design, graphic design and education.
